Mal Yu is a
queer Chinese-Canadian industrial designer based in Toronto. Her work focuses
on emotional design and material exploration, emphasizing products that foster
delight and connection through harmonious material processing.
Her acoustic lighting design "Shelf" was selected as the winner of the
Beta Calco industry project competition, leading to an internship at the
lighting firm for prototype development. Her design "rondo"
has been selected for DesignTO and Umbra's Prototype Exhibition
"Surface Impressions". Her “flodo” light has been selected as part of Interior Design Show Toronto’s Prototype exhibition 2025. Her piece “Lacework” has been selected for the DesignTO Youth Show at Collision Gallery. Mal is a member of the 2024-2025 DesignTO
Youth cohort.
Currently
pursuing a degree in industrial design, she has been recognized with Sheridan
College's "Award of Excellence in Industrial Design" for three
consecutive years, underscoring her commitment to excellence in her field.
